She is well deserving of the attention, because she has introduced us to many heart-stopping songs that you and I have listened to a countless number of times.

As a new singer myself, I absolutely love her take on songwriting and I have even studied some of her lyrics to a fault.

For example, one of her most famous lines in one of her songs “she wears short skirts I wear t-shirts”, in “You Belong With Me”, really has some good principles for us songwriters to understand and implement into our own train of thought.

A simple line like that resonates to a lot of teenage girls and other music lovers. But today is not a songwriting breakdown but a mentorship course on music marketing strategy from one of our top famous singers, ‘Taylor Swift’.

‘Taylor Swift’s’ music marketing strategy will be the perfect example for us to use in our endeavors.

If you have a talent or not, this music marketing strategy example will benefit our ability to market ourselves properly as we aim to become famous like the brilliant men and women we admire today.

‘Taylor Swift’ has been a very powerful force in the music industry since the young age of 14 and has continued to stack-up accomplishments beyond our own understanding.

She is not just a singer, not just a songwriter, not just a performer; she is all of that plus a brilliant marketing genius. How else, can a musician make upwards of $400 million if they are not great at marketing their business?

Songwriting is a powerful tool that ‘Taylor Swift’ uses and has worldwide recognition for. Maybe I should say it again; ‘Taylor Swift’ has world-wide recognition for her songwriting abilities.

She reminds me of how Michael Jackson too was able to create catchy phrasing, and emotional topics to influence people from all walks of life. The greatest feeling as a musician comes when you hear fans repeating your song lyrics word for word, because it means so much to them.

This is a fact most famous singers have attested to including myself. Well, in my case, it was on a much smaller scale.

But imagine the significance of millions on millions of fans who cry and sob because your words have touched them. Its accomplishments such as these that have made ‘Taylor Swift’ more than just an entertainer but an influential individual.

As someone that loves songwriting myself, I see a lot of marketing genius in songwriting not just from ‘Taylor Swift’ but many other famous artists in the music industry. In fact, many brands have used the songwriting expertise of many musicians to build brand recognition and make sales.

HOW DID TAYLOR SWIFT BECOME FAMOUS – THE BACKGROUND STORY OF HOW SHE BUILT A FAN BASE CALLED THE ‘SWIFTIES’

According to source: Wikipedia ‘Taylor Swift’ was born ‘Taylor Alison Swift’ on December 13, 1989 in Reading, Pennsylvania. Imdb.com attested to her ancestry being a combination of English, German, Scottish, Irish, Welsh, and Italian.

Before her birth, her parents decided on her name ‘Taylor’ after famous singer songwriter ‘James Taylor’. Not only is James Taylor a successful singer and songwriter himself, but he also shares a Scottish bloodline and rose to fame with the aid of a wealthy family. Its almost unbelievable how similar he is to ‘Taylor Swift’s’ music career.

‘Taylor Swift’s’ parents already had high hopes that their daughter would one day join the ranks of famous singers or a mogul in the business world.

This is significant because from what I can tell, her parents were wealthy individuals and invested time and energy in making sure their daughter had the best life and a leg up on the competitive pursuit of her dreams.

‘Taylor Swift’s’ father was Scott Kingsley. Mr. Kingsley was a business professional that controlled millions of dollars of some powerful and wealthy men and women through Merrill Lynch.

Her mother is Andrea Gardner Swift, former mutual fund executive and stay-at-home mom. Currently, ‘Taylor Swift’ has a younger brother name Austin Swift who is an actor.

Her grandmother was a trained opera singer and her great-great grandfather on her father side was known for starting numerous businesses in Pennsylvania around the late 1800s. She has a spectacular family indeed, and not to mention, big fans of music.

Taylor’s Swift’s Early Life As An Aspiring New Singer And Songwriter

According to imdb.com: At the age of 9, ‘Taylor Swift’ started focusing on a music career. After her family moved to Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, she started off, by joining Berks Youth Theater Academy.

She performed in numerous plays such as, “Grease”, “Annie”, “Bye Bye Birdie” and “The Sound of Music”. She also spent those years traveling to New York for singing and acting lessons.

As she grew up, by the age of 11 – 12, she learned how to play the guitar due to the help of a local musician and computer repairman. She started traveling with her mother to Nashville to submit demo tapes hoping for a record deal.

She spent weekends performing in festivals and events perfecting her singing and songwriting abilities.

Around 2003, ‘Taylor Swift’s’ family got a New York based talent manager by the name of Dan Dymtrow. Dan Dymtrow is a high-profile music manager that has managed famous singers in various stages of their career.

Artists such as, Britney Spears, Avril Lavigne, and Nicole Scherzinger. The connection with such a high-profile manager allowed ‘Taylor Swift’ to meet and connect with many industry professionals and including getting an artist development deal with RCA Records.

To prevent the constant travels to Nashville, ‘Taylor Swift’s’ father was able to transfer the whole family, due to his professional relationship with Merrill Lynch, to Nashville to give his daughter a fighting chance to making it as a country music artist.

‘Taylor Swift’ was around 14, when she decided to leave RCA for “Big Machine Records”. She was quoted saying, she felt her time was running out when she was with RCA Records.

I find this very interesting; ‘Taylor Swift’ at the time was only 14 years of age but she had a sense of urgency. Just participating in a record label was not enough, she wanted to become famous through the proper backing of a label.

Two more significant events took place that helped ‘Taylor Swift’ become famous. For one, “Big Machine Records” was started by Scott Borchetta, a former DreamWorks Record executive and Toby Keith.

‘Taylor Swift’ had first met Scott Borchetta around 2004. Her meeting with Scott Borchetta again at an industry showcase led her to become “Big Machine Records” first artist.

The event took place at Nashville’s Bluebird café in 2005 and Scott Borchetta offered to sign ‘Taylor Swift’ as his first artist dependent on a deal of-course.

Not much information has been given about the details of the record deal, but its important to note, that ‘Taylor Swift’s’ Father Scott Kingsley Swift had a 3% stake in the company. That investment totaled $120,000. A big sum non-the-less.

This connection with a major label as the leading artist allowed ‘Taylor Swift’ to create music and have the proper marketing dollars focused on her. It was around 2006, ‘Taylor Swift’ released her famous single “Tim McGraw” and a debut album “Taylor Swift”.

She spent much of her time in 2006 touring, and promoting her music via radio, television, social media, and live shows. This led to the second turning point in her career that gave her the boost and attention she needed to become famous.

According to Savingcountrymusic.com ‘Taylor Swift’ was able to open for a show that the “Rascal Flatts” were performing for.

The “Rascal Flatts” were and still are a major country music band with a tremendous fan following. This opportunity fell on ‘Taylor Swift’s’ lap due to her connection with “CAA”, a major talent agency that represented most of the famous singers at the time, during her time with manager Dan Dymtrow.

As the story goes, Eric Church, who was the one opening for the “Rascal Flatts” was fired due to his history of taking too long on stage as the opening act.

From there, and as the story goes, it was all history from there. We have all come to appreciate and love the music superstar ‘Taylor Swift’.

TAYLOR SWIFT’S MUSIC MARKETING STRATEGY EXAMPLE TAKEAWAY – FOR NEW SINGERS, CREATIVES, AND ASPIRING SOCIAL MEDIA INFLUENCERS

Taylor Swift is a perfect example for us as we aspire to the goal of becoming famous. We have seen how money, connections, and a dedicated pursuit of your dreams can work really well in your favor.

It would be easy for you and me to discount ‘Taylor Swift’s’ rise to fame as just the backing of a wealthy family. You have seen how absolute her family was in making sure she lives the best life, get the needed training in her music career, and meet the right individuals that gave her the opportunity.

This, however, is not the reason we love ‘Taylor Swift’. Think about it; how many other wealthy individuals there are in the world. Yet, if they tried, they would not even reach a single ounce of the type of success ‘Taylor Swift’ has had.

Taylor Swift is someone that is intentional, skillful, knowledgeable in business, and most importantly she was urgent. How many 14-year-olds would say after being involved with a major record label that things are not happening fast enough. ‘Taylor Swift’ felt, she could do more and that to become famous, she had to do more than just write songs in the background.

I haven’t discussed it yet, but the marketing strategy that ‘Taylor Swift’ and her manager focused on was audience retention. Audience retention is the perfect music marketing strategy example we need to follow. No business can exist today if they can’t get repeat customers that love and defend their brand.

As new singers, musicians and/or social media creatives, we need to put audience retention as the number one music marketing strategy objective. When we have solid relationships with our fans, we are then able to get attention to our music whenever we need to and can use the power in numbers to share our brand nationwide.

According to TonyRobbins.com and countless sources, ‘Taylor Swift’ is most notable for her abilities to engage with her fanbase.

She is known for contacting her fans directly on social media and sharing their posts. The term “Taylurking” was even coined to personify how she would pay attention to her fans and the most important moments of their lives and offer praise, condolences, or a simple greeting.

We can also talk about how she holds private parties at various locations including her personal home with her fans just so they can truly bond with one another. If your fans truly become your friends, then what do you think happens on special holidays?

Yup, you guessed it. ‘Taylor Swift’ takes it a step further by sending meaningful gifts to her fans and have on countless occasions showed up to fans’ homes just because she is that type of person.

I don’t know about you, but if my favorite celebrity can find the time to do such things for me, I won’t mind paying for an album or two. I will be the most avid promoter of their brand and making sure the world knows how much I care about them.

The “Taylor Swift’ fan club the “Swifties” are a force to be reckoned with. Heck just knowing the benefits, makes me want to join up right away. This is what a true music marketing strategy must have.
